Personal background
I'm 16, and a computer enthusiast. I'm running SETI@home on my homebuilt AthlonXP 1800 machine right now with 512mb of ram. I haven't run it lately, mainly because of cpu intensive work. I really don't think I'll find anything, but I like to give my 1800 a run for my money. I'm going to get some old Pentium computers soon to run Linux on, practice networking skills, and of course, run SETI@home. Sorry if I abandon seti again, but if that Cure for Cancer software ever gets any better (it plain sucks right now, I like seti's features better) then I'll switch over because fighting cancer is more directly important right now. Better yet, I'll run both since I am getting multiple computers after all. Oh well, I like the idea of the project and hope that SETI proves something really important oneday.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am pretty sure that we aren't alone, but I don't know if the life out there is more evolved and advanced than us or not. It could be that the life out there is nothing more than bacteria, but the possibilities are endless. I don't think that I'll actually find anything with this project, but it keeps my cpu busy and makes a great screensaver that I can watch at night until I fall asleep (of course the monitor shuts off and it runs faster after about 30 minutes though). I don't think humans will discover life anytime soon. We have already sent out a space probe that has reached the edge of the solar system, and I guess it would be good to start sending more, but not now, whenever we have the money. I am interested in learning more about another project I have heard about like SETI@home, only it uses home computers for finding a cure for cancer. Yes, I am one that thinks Earthly problems need to be addressed too... so one day I might devote my cpu cycles to that instead, but I tried it out already and I don't like the current interface. In the meantime, I'll have SETI@Home running all the time and I *wish* that one day someone's computer would find a special little pattern or peak in a data unit from a signal that originated from far, far away.
