Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I definitely think extraterrestrial life existed, exists or will exist. That's the crux for me: Life must exist both in close enough spacial proximity and at a point in both our histories for it to really matter. My fervent hope is that the two coincide and that proof is discovered in my lifetime.I'll leave it to wiser people than I to muse over possible benefits. However, if there's any real danger, I doubt that we'd have a chance to respond - it would likely be over before we were aware it had begun. I'd hope that any civilization advanced enough to contact with us would recognize the diplomatic pitfalls and make allowances - not do anything rash.Transmit a beacon? Perhaps not. Even with all the garbage transmitted on the airwaves, maybe it's better to be judged in that overall context than to pin our hopes on one beacon - assuming of course, that the aliens could make sense out of our transmissions... If we did send something, I think it should define our basic building blocks of life and the environment that exists on earth. Pretty much anything else (such as cultural and civilization achievements), however benign from our perspective, would be arbitrary and might be misinterpreted. I would think that the mere fact that the beacon exists would suggest that our intentions were peaceful or at least neutral.I run seti@home because I think it's a wonderful application of distributed processing and a worthy project.
