Personal background
I'm a 43 year old Grade 2 teacher living in Chatham, Ontario. I have a Ph.D. in Hispanic Literatures. My reading interests are very eclectic, but I prefer non-fiction works that are historical and anthropological in theme.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI at home because I believe/hope that humanity is not alone. If we are, it strikes me that God has an especially warped sense of humour. I'm not looking for "help" or "technology" from an advanced trans-galactic civilization. I just want to know that we are not alone. If there are other intelligent species out there, it makes Creation even grander than it is and God's mind more complex that we can even conceive. I hope that one day in my lifetime, we detect a signal whose meaning is "Be not afraid. There are others out here. You are not alone and here is where we are." Do I believe these civilizations are transmitting specifically to Earth? No, I don't. That is both presumptuous and arrogant on our part. If a signal is picked up, it will be because, by some fluke, the Earth happened to be passing through a particular region of space. Will they look like us? That's highly doubtful. I'm eager to know how they communicate, how their intelligence works, how they view the cosmos, do they believe in God, what is their view of God, the meaning of existence, the raison d'etre of the universe as we know it. Life is a series of dualities. There is no reason why that shouldn't be extended on a macro-level. Perhaps there's a companion species out there for us: a yin for humanity's yang.
