Personal background |
My name is Sam Benham and I live in Grand Junction Colorado. I am a machinist by trade, and a hobby musician and engine nut in my off time. My dream job has always been to work in Research and Developement, in particular in the electronics, computers, and communications fields. (Should've gotten me one of them degrees, I suppose.)
As a kid I built all kinds of simple transmitters and receivers, mostly from schematics out of my dad's electronics textbooks and books from the library, and used to pretend that my signals were getting out there to somebody other than the fcc. As a kid, a cosmic pen-pal doesn't seem so far fetched.
The prospect of helping in a scientific endeavor in any capacity is exciting. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
There are so many vanity computers out there wasting their resources on trivial nonesense. The constant distraction offered by the entertainment value of modern technology eclipses the potential for mankind to work together towards some common goals. Shared computing power just seems to make sense. I hope this becomes a trend that people willingly participate in.
I stumbled on this project in particular by accident. Every kid has looked up at the night sky at some point and wished he or she could know more about it - wished he or she could reach out and touch it in some way. I am interested to learn how much people like me are helping to solve complex problems by lending some bandwidth and processor power. Something like this could've really sped the advancement of past projects. Cracking the human genome comes to mind.
It would be neat to have the option to hear what my computer has been working on, not that it would sound like much I'm sure. |
