| Personal background |
Hi, I'm an older RPG and console gamer who now works for ABN AMRO in the mortgage industry. In my off time tries to keep my hand in rolling polyhedrons. I'm 32 and married to a teacher in special education, concentrated in older children with autism. I'm trying to convince her to let me build/refurbish another small machine just for crunching, but I don't think she'll go for it until after we have kids that should have one. That might be a while.
I'm just glad that, like cast members said on the special features of the Firefly DVDs, I know now just how good my life is at this moment, and I don't have to wait for the memories to yellow and fade with age to realize how good I had it. This time is our time, lets make the most of it. |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
SETI is our best bet at gaining undeniable proof Earth is not alone. IMO, that is the real key knowledge we need as a planet to get jump out of the one basket we're in.
Really, The hardest thing about doing something new is knowing whether or not it can be done. After you know that, it's just a matter of trial, error, money, and sustained effort. The hardest place to be in a race is in front, since you don't have anyone to chase. The chase is what inspires us to do more than we think we can, do the things we need to do because to do less is certain failure. Having proof of technology-using intelligence beyond human knowledge would finally put us in the number 2 spot in the race. That's the kick in the pants this species needs.
That's why I support SETI@home.
As my handle alludes to, I'm a fan of the Frank Herbert Dune Chronicles, but those teams all seem defunct or run by one person. not really a team then, is it? The Browncoats are a small enough team that I feel I make a measurable contribution to the team, but large enough to make a significant contribution to seti@home. And the Browncoats are just cool. Dune - Firefly link: Am I the only one that thinks the Companions of Firefly could grow into the Bene Gesseritt?
As far as recomendations go, I'm thinking that team rankings could use some maintainence. Teams with 0 members should probably stop showing up in standings, and those teams whose founder no longer has any activity on the site should have their founder/moderator functions switched over to an active member or the team disbanded so they can form a new team to replace the old.
just my two cobblestones-worth. |
