Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I absolutely believe that extraterrestrial life exists, but I do not know if humans will ever discover it. The universe is a big place after all, and even if there were billions of other planets inhabited with intelligent life the chances of receiving a signal from one of them are remote. Even once we are able to travel faster than the speed of light, we would still have a lot of looking to do.

I run SETI@home simply because my computers may as well be doing something while I am not using them, not to mention that the premise behind the project is exciting. Some of my friends run the Distributed.net client that works finding encryption keys, but I find that to be rather bland. Besides the fact that finding an encryption key is inevitable given enough time, finding it really doesn't change society, nor is it very exciting. On the other hand, finding a signal that originated from extraterrestrial life perhaps millions of years ago would have a profound impact on everything that we know and believe.
