Personal background
I'm a Registered Nurse, living in Kansas. I have a number of hobbies, from computing (number 1) to crocheting, dancing, watching tv, reading and the list goes on. I love science fiction for the fiction of today is quite liable to be the fact of tomorrow. Didn't those comm units in the old Star Trek series look just a little like a cell phone?I had one small brush with the extra-terrestrial. I was at work one evening and having a break outside. I looked up to the heavens and saw a large green glowing falling something or other...lol. Much later, I learned that it was a reflection off of a spaceship we had sent up. Or was it?? hmmm.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1.) Yes I think the possibility is there. Will I live to see us make first contact? Probably not. Do I think Aliens from another star system have visited us? Again, probably not. If they have they are the neatest of individuals or we have a very good clean up team.

2.) Yes we should do all in our power to advance our knowledge base. We would not want to send anything suggestive of weakness. We should concentrate on the positives in our society, the arts, humanities...etc.

3.) I run Seti at home because of the co-operative aspect, working together for a common goal, ie building our knowledge base. Beside that, I am not a computer expert, and it just plain feels good to know this machine is doing something useful. I am not sure we will discover life in another star system or even our solar system this way, but we might. Hope is a very powerful human emotion.
