Personal background
Hi!!

I am Julien, I am 32 years old and work in insurance. Exciting, I know. I love driving, history, photoraphy and of course astronomy, although my knowledge of it is akin to my knowledge of the contents of the queen's wardrobe.

I collect coins and am basically an anorac. I want to climb a mountain, be alive when we receive that important extra-terrestrial signal, and i dont get enough sleep for my liking.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home because i think it is important that we carry on a search which could have amazing and profound implications for all life on Earth. I think we have to be optimistic that one, life is out there intelligent enough to transmit signals, and two, that contact with such being will be a mainly overwhelmingly positive move for the future of our planet.

Humans are primitive, and when compared to the intelligence of a being millions or even billions of years more advanced than us, we are no more intelligent than an ant or a bee. These beings will have wisdom, as a person of 100 years has compared to a teenager. These beings will be free entities who have discarded their bodies as tools or industry are no longer any use to them. They will have learnt from an almost infinate number of mistakes throughout their mind boggling history, and will probably thank their lucky stars that they weren't consumed by their own red giant.

I do understand why governments throw scorn and very little resources into SETI, but the populas want it, and believe in it. It is usually a minority, or an individual who goes against the grain that make the most amazing discoveries through dedication in the face of indifference or ignorance.
