Profile: Richard

Personal background
My name is Richard Allwood - but call me Rick. I am 43 and an adjunct professor of History and Humanities at University of Texas at El Paso. I have an MA in European History and an MA in Theology. Currently, I am preparing to become a priest in the Episcopal Church. My hobbies include historical and theological research, writing, and astronomy. As a theologican I believe that the universe is teaming with life of all types, including intellegent life. It will be interesting to see how the realization of this fact will influence human theological and philosophical systems when the day comes that such life is discovered. What will other civilizations think about God? Will they even have such a concept? What are their respective creation myths? Etc. How will we humans interfuse their ideas into our own systems of theological and philosophical thought? These are questions that will be more than academic one day. I sort of wonder if we are ready for it. Last year I was terminated from my employment with a Catholic school here is El Paso, TX for asking such questions to my senior students in a World Religions class. A few parents objected claiming I was teaching heresy. This makes me wonder if we could deal with the reality of life on other worlds. Yet, I believe that we must search for the truth and go where it leads regardless of our personal beliefs.
