Personal background
My name is Tony, Im 34 years old and live in Cambridge.

Originally from just outside of Durham, I joined the Army straight from school in Jun 1989 and was discharged in Oct 2005. During my time I serverd in Germany, Holland, Northern Ireland and Bosnia. As well as the regular duty posts, I also got to visit Spain, Italy, Belgium, France and Norway on exercises or training.

I turned my knack for computers into a second career and now do 2nd line IT support for local a government office. I look after around 500 users and although the role isnt as well paid as my old Army salary, every day sees different challenges.

Apart from computers, I like history, especially information about the World Wars. Although not as much a bookworm as I used to be, I still like to kick back with a real book rather than reading e-books!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI for a bit of fun. I like to think that in some small way I can contribute to a project that would otherwise be unthinkable in size if it werent for distributed computing.

Back in 2002 I got started with SETI Classic and after roping in a few friends and quite a few computers, we got competitive and started crunching hard for the PC Format team.

My target was to hit 100,000 WUs before the end of the project and I have to say that we literally squeaked under the wire with just over 101,000 WUs completed. We closed down the server crunchers as we hit 100,000 and my single clients continued to crunch through until their caches were exhausted for our final result. Finishing in the top 1000 users in the world was a massive achievement for myself and all my friends that were involved. Unfortunately I forgot to download the certificates for the milestones but I hope someone might be able to help me out with that!

Unfortunately due to 'green' issues, I cant run the client on all the PCs I look after at work but I'm looking into building a dedicated 'multi cpu, multi core crunching machine' sometime in the future.
