Profile: Mik Porter

Personal background
My nickname comes from the old Space Invaders days of entering initials for high scores. I didn't like my middle name so put "MIK" instead and its stuck since then. I'm 42 (born in 1963) and have a wife and two children and I work in the outsourced IT industry as a Technical Architect. I've read Sci-Fi since I was 8 and loved the old Perry Rhodan pulp paperbacks - it was Sci-Fi that gave me my interest in physics and, later, computers.
I've always believed in life "out there" as the Universe is too large for us to be alone in it. At the end of the day Newton's laws hold true for the Universe that Newton could measure and Einstein's hold true for the Universe HE could measure. When we find our neighbours they'll show us the Universe THEY can measure and we'll start work on a new set of laws and theories. If we are alone then "it's a Hell of a waste"
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'm a great fan of collaboration and think this is a great way to use those CPU cycles that keep littering my floor. The protein folding project is also a great idea but I prefer the search for green men.
