Personal background
PROFESSIONAL COMPUTER NERD
I spend more time than I really should at my computer. I am 21 years old, ex-Fortune 500 tech support guy. Currently I am making a vague attampt at freelancing some graphics work and web programming while I learn cooler things like ASP.NET, Visual Basic.NET and 3D programs like Maya.
I live in Genoa, Ohio, US. There is not a ton to do in my little town so my broadband connection and satellite fill a lot more of my time than they should. I have a long term girlfriend who draws me away from the evils addiction that is known as technology on occasion, but I have to admit I spend just as much time at my computer as I do with her.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

1. I can't believe that life other than ours does not exist. I think that would be a boring and improbable universe. People who don't believe life exists elsewhere are either too heavily involved with a tribe called "organized religion" or a typical egotistical human being who can't believe anything could be as good as him/her. I believe that we are following the best path available to us for looking for other races, but my guess is that if we find some kind of communication it will have been intentionally sent to us. We just have to keep listening. Just as with any other huge scientific discovery or ability, communication with other intelligent beings will (unless absolutely obvious, like a flying saucer the size of Montana landing) be doubted until someone can come up with some sort of explanation from the Bible/Koran/etc. I doubt that such an answer will be found, so a lot of people will be wearing signs that say "The end is near”. No matter how much chaos ensues after first contact, the immense knowledge we could gain from a superior race would outweigh any problems.
2. Well, I don't think that another golden LP is the best idea, but something that has a map to our solar system encoded in as many ways as a think-tank of people smarter than I can come up with. All we can really do is transmit in the ways we know. We have to assume that the recipient will have something in common with our senses or technology. Send sound, sight, smell, texture, the works.
3. I have a computer up and running 24 hours a day. It is rare that it pegs the machine at 100% or even close. I looked in to a few distributed computing options since I am obsessed with having the computer do something at all times. I decided that SETI has everything I wanted. It gives me a sense of accomplishment, does not get in my way while using the computer, has an interesting interface and the topic is something I believe in. I just want to do my little part.
