Personal background
I work in IT at the University of Washington. I support the university's campus-wide HPC initiative, Hyak. In my free time I enjoy backpacking, rock climbing, and other outdoor activities. I have run SETI on and off for a number of years on a wide array of hardware and OSes.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Finding other intelligent life in the universe is certainly a very worthwhile goal. It is really a question of whether or not it wants to be found and assuming it wants to be found, then how much effort is it putting into that goal. It seems like it would be a fairly large commitment of resources to transmit a signal strong enough and consistently available enough to be found through a project of this sort. Still though, it certainly does not hurt to listen and hope.
