Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) I think ET life definitely exists. For sure on a spiritual plane, and perhaps on a physical plane.

Benefits of discovery? Hmmm..
more history to study?
perhaps to have a guardian before we destroy ourselves?
perhaps to unite the Earth? I am incredibly tired of all our squabbling and killing here on Earth.
and finally, the best case scenario: a friendly guide who would be able to introduce us to the wonders the universe without learning the dangers the hard way.

Dangers of discovery?
who knows what kind of life will discover us...

Something to think about, the more advanced we get in technology, it gives us exponentially more power to apply towards good or towards destruction. It may be that the more advanced races are, the more likely they are to destroy themselves. :(
I believe it does not take a prophet to know we are currently hurtling into oblivion (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/books/1576830705)

2) What we should send? No! _How_ we should send it!! Not sure if my idea is new, so I will date it with today's date: 2002SEPT22
one word: 'entanglement' (http://www.csmonitor.com/2001/1004/p15s1-stss.htm) I believe the universe is a 'seamless whole' (http://www.creatingstrategies.com/articles/time_management/does_time_stand_still) I believe we should be spinning atoms in mathematical sequences in a warehouse full of different elements and then monitoring them for intelligent responses. I believe this FTL communication should be common for intelligent species out in the cosmos. Perhaps others have the FTL equivalency of a 'scanner' that would be able to pick up our attempt at communication; then they could fashion a response albeit as simple to them as morse code radio communication is for us today.

3) Well, I would like to help out. I have always been curious about the stars and what is out there, what better way to find out about what is out there than to find a friendly guide?
