Profile: Donna Smillie

Personal background
A Scottish 40-something living in England, I've been in the Navy, worked in libraries, provided telephone customer technical support, designed and maintained websites and now advise on web accessibility. An interesting mix, and the one thread of continuity has been that I always end up working with computers and usually end up helping others work more easily with them.

I've always been fascinated by computers, gadgets and gizmos - my latest toys are my Palm and my mobile phone - I don't go anywhere without them. I love reading and fantasy role playing games - my SO and I have been running an on-going D&D campaign for over 10 years now, with a group of friends who come round once a month to don their alter egos and fight evil for a day - great fun and great friends.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I enjoy reading science fact, fiction and fantasy, and have long believed that "we're not alone". I have no conception as to what sort of life might be out there - it might be rare and far flung and difficult to find, but I do believe it exists. So the idea of being able to play a part in the work of looking for signs of sentient life elsewhere seemed like an excellent way of using the spare capacity on my PC. Who knows - the odds may be way against it, but it might just be my PC that crunches that elusive signal. :-)
