Profile: Cynthia

Personal background
My name is Cynthia Anne Simmons. At present I teach at Arizona State University. I'm 59 years old and I am currently a PhD student in Computational, Corpus and Historical Linguistics. My dissertation is a defense of modernist philosophy of science (Yay, Alan Sokal!) through an analysis of post-modernity and its anti-science bias using the Philosophy of Language (Austen, Grice and Searle) and Speech Act Theory. I also do research in the Semantics/Pragmatics interface with a minimalist approach (Yay, Frege!).

I am still in love with astronomy and the beauty of physics and love building and programming PC's.

I will ABD this Fall and hopefully will defend my diss in the spring of 2010.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It seems like an interesting hobby. I really think we are lonely, proud monkeys in a big empty universe.
