Personal background
I work for the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
I enjoy cross stitching, watching tv/movies and reading, but not necessarily in that order. I am a fan of The X-files, even though the final three seasons were horrible. I still miss it! Lost has replaced that niche in my life, to some extent.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes, it's possible that there are other intelligent beings out there. However, I think they can see how we're screwing up our planet and they're just staying out of the way until they destroy ourselves and then they'll come take over the planet. I don't know if they'd want to associate with a species like ours.
If it turns out this is not the case, it's always possible that they could help us with some of our problems (pollution, over-crowding, etc.), but I think the former scenario is more likely.

2. I think that by sending out signals saying "We Are Here" we also risk the possibility of attracting unwanted attention from something that might decide to destroy us. Or perhaps I've watched too many episodes of Star Trek...

3. I'm running SETI because I think it's interesting, and I'm helping out a cause. Plus, my computer at work just sits here doing nothing most of the time, so I figure I should donate some of that wasted energy!
