Personal background
I am 29, soon to be 30, and I am from Idaho. I live here in peaceful bliss with my wife and our children. I am a linguist, with a focus on Artifical and Celtic Languages. I am also own a roleplaying game design company. Basically I sit around all day long, learn new languages, read books, and pretend I am working.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that extraterrestrial life must exist, the statistical probability dictates that. However, I am unsure whether 'intelligent' (insert qualifying definition here) life exists or not. I believe humans will discover it when 1) They want to be discovered or 2) We get dang lucky. The possible benefits and dangers are no greater than Lewis and Clark discovered on their way to Washington. I think humans should set up a beacon. I really don't have an opinion on what should be sent... Possibly some sort of primer on a dead languages grammatical structure and vocabulary so we would have an effective way to communicate. I run SETI@home because I believe the project is useful.
