I do think that there are other civiilizations in the universe. While we haven't detected them yet, at the rate our technology improves, I do think we will find them in this century. The benefits from such a discovery (I hope) will be an end to the petty bickering between people that exists today (questions of race/equality/etc.) I think one danger is finding another race that has violent tendancies and humans having to defend themselves in a war we are not ready for.
