Personal background |
Everyone calls me Keef. I'm 67, a retired Controller from Ford Motor Co, a Reader in the Church of England (an unpaid ministry), radio amateur, private pilot, keen amateur astronomer, computer nerd, grandfather... I live in rural Suffolk, England. I've been running SETI off and on for about 12 years. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
As a minister in the Church, my view on extraterrestrial life is (and must be) a definite YES, but not in the sense SETI is researching. I would not be at all surprised if intelligent life were found elsewhere in the universe, but I would be delighted. I doubt very much if we'll communicate with any such life in the foreseeable future - but we may copy their transmissions. I'm not convinced of the value of sending our own signals - they'll not reach anywhere meaningful for a very long time; we don't know which direction to send them, and the power required to send anything meaningful is prohibitive. I think it's far better to listen than to transmit. I run SETI at home since the spare computer capacity may as well be used for something worthwhile. I'm impressed by the determination of the folks running the programme, and intrigued to know the results of the analysis as it unfolds. |
