Profile: Andrew Lafko

Personal background
I'm currently a Systems Engineer working for Cisco Systems in the metro Boston, MA, USA area. My interest in the SETI project started several years ago when I was still in high school. My hobbies generally revolve around anything involving computers, Linux, or networking. I enjoy the spirit of cooperative competition that embodies SETI@Home and BOINC- go USA!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I run SETI@Home because I firmly believe that there is ET Intelligence somewhere out there. I was fortunate enough to hear Dr. Frank Drake give a presentation as an undergrad at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. While I had been an active SETI@Home contributor for years before, it only served to increase my optimism that the radio telescope method (as opposed to searching about for 'snail-mail' signals) is the best way to go.

2. I think the project is a wonderful opportunity for scientists, geeks, and the general public across the world to join together for a common cause. Science has always been one of the purest arts that mankind peruses. The parallel architecture of the computations involved with SETI@Home allows for all of us to feel like we took part in something truly spectacular.

3. The recent upgrade to BOINC is quite lovely. While I currently donate my FLOPs to SETI@Home alone, I feel that BOINC is an excellent way for the world's computational public to express what they feel is most important.
