Personal background
I am a 77 year old male living in Orange Park Florida. Born in Texas, raised in Iowa and entered the Air Force at age 18. Became a fighter pilot and flew combat with the 357th Fighter Group in England during wwII, hence the P-51 handle. Made a 27 year career of the Air Force and retired in Dec. 1969. I joined the seti project at the very beginning and currently have 5 computers processing data around the clock. I have always been fascinated by science but having gone into the Air Force right out of high school, I never was able to obtain the schooling necessary to persue a scientific field. Seti seemed to me as the perfect way to contribute to science in some small way.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1.I am totally convinced that extraterrestrial life exists. It seems unthinkable that we be the only solar system to have life evolve when basically the entire universe is composed of the same matter and the laws that allowed life to evolve here are the same laws in force in the billions upon bilions of other star systems.
I have no idea how or when we will discover life elsewhere but the important thing is that NOW we are looking.
2.Sure we should send a signal to star systems that appear promising as possible harbors of life elsewhere. I think the signal should be simple, perhaps a right triangle or pyramid.
3.I run seti at home because I have always been very interested in science but was never able to participate in a constructive manner. Seti allows me in some small way to contribute to science endeavor. I am very excited about the project. I have one suggestion: modify the software for setiathome to make presentation of all the graphics optional. After runnintg seti for some 70000 hours I have seen all the graphics I need to see but more importantly, seti would undoubtable run faster without all those graphics.
