Personal background
My name is Denny. I'm 32 and a Senior Network Administrator in Fairfax, VA USA. I am an avid supporter of Open Source and have worked for years supporting and building in multiple projects. My hobbies include programming and computers (duh), digital photography, and anything outdoors (hiking, camping, fishing, etc.).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I've been an avid supporter of SETI@Home for years under many accounts from many companies. Each company I have worked at I've tried to encourage others to join the SETI@Home project and usually put all of my servers in SETI mode when they are not doing anything else. I believe we're not the only people in the universe and that someday perhaps SETI will find a good signal. I'm always the optomist, so therefor I believe one day, perhaps in this lifetime, we'll know that others exist for fact, and not just for fiction. I've seen it argued that "what if" an alien race doesn't use radio signals so I'd like to put forth the question - "what if" they do. What if another race of humans (or aliens perhaps) evolved much in the same way we have, industrialized and learned to use radio signals much in the way that we have? This, I believe, is the hope and foundation behind SETI and frankly I think one day this foundation will prove to be useful. There are many different ways of looking for ET - this is just one of them and one that uses the Grid to make it happen - kudos to the programmers who wrote BOINC and I hope it always has a purpose and a use no matter the project!
