Profile: Taher Shihadeh

Personal background

Actually not from Gaza. From Palestine. Currently a refugee in Spain (one among many others. We're more than 7.5 millions over the World), where I have spent most of my life, since we are not allowed to live in our own land. In the name of... Peace, was it? I think that's what's said. As natural as sponsoring with 5 billion US$/year a racist State -and it's not me who says so...it was the rest of the Planet at Durban's Conference- O:-)
Luckily there's people who knows what's really done with Palestinians' Human Rights, who criticize their politics and who repulse what is simply not morally acceptable (example: the Jews who assisted to Durban to repulse zionism. My salutations and respects to them, Asimov, Einstein, Woody Allen and a long etcetera of intellectually respectable giants -therefore non zionist- Jewish people). BTW: just to answer some profiles I saw ... Jerusalem IS OURS (that's what UN says, you know) :-)

It is a doubtful honor being the first in this section since this 'Gaza' stating stuff (instead of Palestine) seems suspicious to me. Oh well... it's no secret that zionism *IS* extended. Something that should give people something to think on. Jo there, staff! If one of these days you get time to read some mails and create the proper country register... nice job. Anyway... Science is the priority. For all of us, I hope :)

What else? Me...let's see:

I'm finishing computer engineering this course (2k1-2k2), and Medicine in a couple more (I hope! %-)

Hobbies: Reading, computers, Science in general -Physics, Astronomy, etc. The normal geek pack ;-) -. Definitely... reading Carl Sagan was a "bad" influence in my childhood ;-) "Cosmos" was the responsible for all this! As my mom says... before they gave me that present they could have swore that I was normal (I mean with a future and all that %-) X-D Apart from that, I even have a life %-) My prefered: spending time with friends.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

1) I do think ETI exists. If not... what a waste of space! %-)

It's just a statistical matter. Our insignificant galaxy simply has too many stars where this Life & Evolution game can give a try.

And about getting in contact with ETIs... who knows (Casimir effect exists, you know). Anyhow we could at least have light speed communications. That is... if instant transmission (quantum entanglement usage) proves not being usable. As I always say... this weird thing called Science is an interesting journey indeed.

2) I don't think it would be dangerous finding out that we're not alone. It's a pity that it probably won't happen in the near future. Knowledge should always be welcomed. And it's not probable that any intelligent race can get too far being violent (which, on the other hand...is a misfortune from OUR point of view; for what Future could present us).

Information should be beamed. And hopefully knowledge shared. The state of our mathematics and physics would be a good start (since Biology would probably be of little use, and data related to culture, society and art would be less urgent - anthropology, though interesting, doesn't affect too directly our way of living IMHO-).

3) And... finally... the big question. Why do I run this program?

Detecting signals is unprobable (we are expecting signals from a race that: a) has to be intelligent, and b) has to have had a similar technological situation as ours in the moment of doing their emission). But what if?

It would be shameful for us as Species if it resulted that there was somebody trying to get in touch, and we didn't even bother listening.

I got amazed when I knew of Seti project in the late 80's, and I got astounded when I knew of Seti@Home.

We, humans, do have lots of things for which we should feel shame. Let's hope this doesn't become one more of the list. And let's hope more people join the project. Long live Seti@Home.
