Profile: Mark Hofreiter

Personal background
I was born in Miami, Florida and lived in various cities in California and Florida. I presently live in Orlando, Florida, in the USA. I have been married for 24 years. Me and my wife made 2 more human beings, a girl 22 years old and a boy 16. My present age is 48 and I am a design draftsman using AutoCAD software on a Dell 330 system. I work helping design and drawing the plans for water and wastewater systems for a private utility supplying those services to approximately 250,000 residents in my state. My avocations are: bonsai, song writing and singing folk music with my buddy Dennis Schmalstig. I also am an artist; I paint with oils and water colors, draw, sculpt and do some collage. I play the drums as well.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I think extraterrestrial life exists. And perhaps humans discover it when we are ready psychically. When we are peaceful and quiescent maybe then we will be able to see what is there to see. What has been there all along. A pattern that has been staring us in the face all these years of seeing but unable to see a pattern that hasn't even been dreamed buy humans yet. And can't be because we aren't very quiet and inward looking. Yes, humans should transmit a beacon for others to find. We should transmit a simple description of our hearts delight with whatever technology we dream up; a technology not necessarily based on RF. I am a part of SETI@home because I feel the tingly excitement of touching something much, much bigger than myself. My view of the project is that you are no doubt on the right track. Steady on.

"Ford was very kind - he gave the barman another five-pound note
and told him to keep the change. The barman looked at it and then
looked at Ford. He suddenly shivered: he experienced a momentary
sensation that he didn't understand because no one on Earth had
ever experienced it before. In moments of great stress, every
life form that exists gives out a tiny sublimal signal. This
signal simply communicates an exact and almost pathetic sense of
how far that being is from the place of his birth. On Earth it is
never possible to be further than sixteen thousand miles from
your birthplace, which really isn't very far, so such signals are
too minute to be noticed. Ford Prefect was at this moment under
great stress, and he was born 600 light years away in the near
vicinity of Betelgeuse."
