Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1. Do you think extraterrestrial life exists?
Basically i believe in extraterrestrial life - but not the way it is shown in movies... thats the wrong picture after all. I do not think that we will discover life outside our own planet as long as we do not leave our planet on our own. Civilizations take their time - they must be organized and just looking back into history of mankind... it takes a long time to get organized and a far longer time to achieve such a goal that we are after. Whatever intelligence is out there it will have to live through exactly the same ups and downs like we did and still do. So I take this SETI programme more as a hobby mankind has to get a better picture of what planets are out there, that, at one stage of our own technical development, will be most appropriate for us to settle down. And since it is quite impossible to use the whole output of a CPU all day long I run this little programme... maybe it is a little help to whatever mankind is after. Step by step we will come closer to that goal, with each datapackage that we, as a community, send back to SETI-HQ.
2. Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find?
Transmitting or not transmitting information? This makes no big difference really. This information will travel for hundrets, maybe thousands of years, until some other civilization will find it. But why not? Send them all historical content and also conclusions... refering to what we have learned out of it - this would best few our true nature and the development we had gone through... maybe attach to such data the constelations of stars so those others could count back when it was sent? Knowledge would be... completely useless and music? Well, one might not grasp the sense of it ;-)
3. Why do you run SETI?
I basically keep my PC busy :-) I would not want it to get bored, you see? |
