Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
In my opinion, extraterrestrial life does exist because the universe is just TOO BIG for us to be alone-there has to be someone else out there.
if ET life is more advanced than us, they'll probably find us first (if they're even trying). in the other hand, it could just happen that ET life is maybe simply low-intellingence animal and plant life, so they're not transmitting or searching for any kind of ident beacons-that could make the search a bit harder.
in case of a contact, there are various thing to happen. if the other species is of an intelliget form, they could be peaceful or conquerors-that again, would be a pretty serious problem if they would have techonology of intergalactic travelling (not so possible, but there IS a slight chance of that). again, they might be "nice" and willing to help our devastating human kind.
if the species was animals or plants, the would probably be no interaction-we barely travel to moon, Mars... how would we get a few 100 light years away? and stay alive ;-)
there is a communication barrier! let's say we DO find INTELLIGENT peaceful species-how would we communicate? i doubt they would know some our language or we their language.
humans should send a beacon;no question about it-various beacons actually! to various locations also! by various beacons I mean various frequencies and types- who can tell that they are not using a 1Hz or 1 GHz waves and/or looking for this wavelenghts? but one thing is sure-SEND PICTURES-NO WORDS (text, speech)the pictures should be 2D and show our cities, nature, globe...and our lifeforms (animals, plants, people) also, we should send out pictures which could show them our position in space-maps and photos.

sorry 'bout a longer text, but I couldn't stop myself ;-)
