Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Given the size of the known universe, I think it is unlikely that the circumstances that produced life on Earth are so unique that we are the only life. However, given the vast age of the universe, it is quite possible that there is currently no other civilised life in our galactic neighbourhood. After all - we don't know how long technological civilisations last.

Benefits and dangers depend on the type of contact. If we detect a random signal, that is a very different story from if we make physical contact with another civilisation. Our own history shows that usually, the less advanced of two civilisations is destroyed, with few surviviors.

Hopefully, any race that is advanced enough to make physical contact is advanced enough to treat us with more respect than western civilisation had for native americans, aboriginals etc etc.

2. Potentially.

3. I like the idea of distributed computing - putting all those wasted MHz to good use. I also believe in the SETI goals.
