Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think it is somewhat unlikely that intelligent life of a civilization roughly as advanced as ours exists in our galaxy. I hold out the hope that we will detect an extraterrestrial signal within my lifetime (which is why I have been giving Seti@home my spare CPU cycles). However, I tend to think that Fermi's paradox is hard to explain away - if they exist at all, why haven't we found them already? I do believe it is exceedingly likely that some forms of life exist off-planet. On the question of whether we should transmit a beacon for possible galactic neighbors to receive, it seems to me that we have been, unintentionally, for decades. Television and radio broadcasts have rendered this a moot point. Anyway, if ET decided to invade, it would be the smallest residents of our world - the bacteria - that would save us from extinction. Read your H.G. Wells if you don't believe me. Seti@home has been a ground-breaking experiment in distributed computing and I look forward to participating in the upcoming BOINC project.
