Profile: Erwin Mulder

Personal background
I'm a 27 year old PhD student from the Netherlands. I'm currently doing
research on visual systems in insects and particularyin the neural processing
of information. I'm also active as a teacher in robotics and system analysis,
so I actually understand the statistics bit that the SETI software is doing.
In my spare time I like to travel, photograph, draw and basically look at the
stars =P
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that extraterrestial life is certain to exist, but it's the question
if we will ever have contact with it. It might even be that some day we visit
another planet and do not even recougnise life as such because of the completely
unfamiliar form it might have. On the other hand, if we don't try and look -
or listen in this case - for it, we're certainly nog going to find anything. As
for transmitting a signal ... I think it would be a waste of energy to do such
a thing if you have no idea what kind of signals are used or indeed generally
understood even if there are further developped civilisations out there. The
reason I participate is that we need to listen to the stars and try to find
anything new .. perhaps we `just' discover some new natural phenomena, but that
would be an achievement on its own. And oh yeah, it gives my Linux boxes
something useful to do with their CPU idle time ;)
