Personal background
Hi, I'm from Manchester in the United Kingdom, my date of birth is 4th September 1977. I am a Photographer/Illustrator; I am interested in all the sciences, although physics and astronomy are my particular favourites. I am a member of the Macclesfield Astronomical Society (http://www.maccastro.co.uk/) based at the Jodrell Bank Radio Observatory (http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/) in Cheshire England.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. The question of the existence of extraterrestrial life never enters my mind. In a universe that we will probably never totally discover, it is stupid and illogical to think that we are the only ones. Did the doubt ever come into yours?

I hate to say it, but I think that we will not directly discover extraterrestrial life for many centuries, possibly millennia. We may be lucky and eavesdrop on background transmissions. We are just too young, cosmologically speaking.

We are still very young mentally, and until we rid ourselves of the GOD (Parent) problem we will always remain so. Do you remember loosing sight of your parents for the first time when you were very young? They may only have been a short distance away but that sharp pang of realisation hits you, you think you are lost in a sea of people. It is the same feeling that mankind is currently experiencing. We need to grow up, only then will we have the mental ability to deal with new discoveries and new life.

2. I believe that we should be transmitting a beacon, otherwise how will other worlds know we are here. We should also be sending deep space probes of into the cosmos. These transmissions/probes should contain our location and total world knowledge/history. It may be a little like a message in a bottle, but they are eventually found.

3. My decision to run SETI@home was quite a simple one. I wanted to help mankind in some small way. The discovery of extraterrestrial life will be one of the greatest discoveries in human history.
