Profile: millomite

Personal background
Hi there! I'm a 46 year old married man from a small town called Millom in the Lake District region of England. I have worked in the Nuclear Industry for 21 years, following a short teaching career, and am currently responsible for maintaining the environmental management systems on site.

My hobbies include Rugby Union, Clay Target Shooting and drinking real ale.

The SETI Project is a very worthwhile enterprise and I am proud to be part of the first Internet based research programme. Space travel has always fascinated me since I was lucky enough to watch the first lunar landing on TV. Star Trek is a favourite programme of mine although I don't take it too seriously - unlike some!

I would like to be one of the first to decode a verifiable contact from another civilisation - but that is probably the goal of all us Setiites.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
There is, I feel,a high probability that life exists on other planets based on the large number of stars and the recent discoveries of planets in orbit around them. It may be, however, that intelligent life (simply defined, in the absence of any other, as the capability to contact another life-form on a a distant planet)is a rare occurrence dependent on the particular attributes of the planet and its mother star and also evolutionary pressures on the life forms of that planet. We have many thousands of successful species on this planet (defined either by their ability to survive millenia relatively unchanged or their ability to evolve when the environment changes)but only one that, so far, has sufficient intelligence to investigate the Universe in which it lives. Although I believe that SETI is a worthwhile project I sometimes wonder if we would be better employed looking for signs that an intelligent life-form is travelling through or living in Space. Our advances in science may one day make this a viable proposition.
