Personal background
I'm a 42 year old Management Consultant and IT Security Specilaist living in the South of England with my Irish wife. Past career moves include working as a programmer analist for a bunch of high energy physicists involved in the LEP Accelerator at CERN (if your a physicist, size DOES matter), and brief period as Vice President of Operations of a "dot com" (now a dot-gone!!).

I used to like living dangerously and my past hobbies included skydiving and paragliding (which begs the question "is there intelligent life on earth?"). These dangerous pastimes are now a thing of my past, but despite a few grey hairs I still like to act the big kid and throw my mountain bike about a bit.

In the past year I have rekindled an old interest in astronomy and now consider myself to be quite a keen amateur. My interest at the moment is experimenting with astrophotography using webcams.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Aren't we proof that life exists in the universe? It must be reasonable to assume that there is a small but finite probability that it will be found elsewhere in the universe. I'm sure that SETI will find something worth investigating eventually, but with current technology maybe it will just find more questions than answers.

Should we transmit a beacon? I see no harm at all in communication from a distance but physical contact is a completely different matter. Any civilisation from another solar system that is capble of getting here must be from a much more technologically advanced civilisation, but not necessarily socially advanced. If we must learn one thing from own human behaviour, its how the more advanced societies on this planet have exploited the less advanced. Why would another alien civilisation make the trip? Curiosity? Shopping? Reseach? Or Lunch... not sure I fancy being on the menu!!!

Maybe I've been reading a little too much science fiction.
