Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) Extra-terrestrial life almost certainly exists. Extra-terrestrial intelligence is also highly probable; but the other question that needs answering is, 'Is there intelligent life on Earth?!'
The dangers are that if we find life signals we will be unable to get there to have a look because the physical laws of the universe may prevent it [i.e. there may be no such thing as a warp drive]; if we find life and it is far smarter than we are, we could be telling a predator that there is a habitable planet available for use.
2) No Beacon: As in World War I, keep heads below the parapet until absolutely necessary [although in fact radio and television have provided the beacon for 100 years so it's too late now].
3) Run Setiat home because my computer might as well do some work whilst I'm not using it.
