Profile: Fizziksman

Personal background
I am a 32 year old high school physics teacher - an ideal candidate to run SETI@Home. I use it as a jumping off point in classroom discussions, but my true motivation is a personal interest in the project. I am originally from New York, but have migrated to Florida as so many New Yorkers do.

My vast library of science fiction literature has spawned romantic ideas of alien life, but the scientist in me looks for conrete evidence before jumping to any conclusions. I suppose that profile places me sqaurely in the majority of the typical SETI afficionados. In addition to sci-fi, I am also a huge sports fan and I participate in numerous fantasy sports leagues. This hobby might also reflect my love of numbers and statistics as much as an affinity for sporting competition.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that there is every possibility in this vast universe that life exists. I also acknowledge the possibility that conditions on Earth may have been a serendipitous accident. In the spirit of Carl Sagan, I would just say that the jury is still out. I think the SETI@Home project is a great way to attack the question in an impartial and scientifically valid manner, so I am all for it. Innovative ideas such as this will always have a place in the scienntific realm. I love the project and have been running it on my computer since May of 1999.
