Personal background
Hello to the world of SETI!
I'm a 53 yr old former cross country trucker (25 yr)who now works as a maintenance supervisor for a large quarry & asphalt company. My girlfriend & I have a house in the small village of Claverack,NY, which is a little South of Albany.
Four years ago I knew nothing about computers. Took a couple of basic classes and since then have learned quite a bit through trial & error. (mostly error!).Just built my 1st computer & started running SETI in the background. (P3 1ghz w/512mb RAM running Windows ME). Darn thing actually works!
My other hobbies are watching & attending NASCAR Winston Cup Races, as well as some CART & F1. I also have been skydiving since 1988. The included foto was taken by me about 1000ft above the Olde Rhinebeck Aerodrome, where I often jump as part of the air show. It's great fun, & the ham in me enjoys the applause of the crowd!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Of course! How could anyone be so arrogent as to believe we are the only intelligent beings in this vast universe? If I a fortuneteller who could answer the question of when & how I wouldn't be writing this. I'd be drinking a Pina Colada on my yacht, having won every major lottery in the country! I think the benefits of discovery would outweigh the risks. I think the only real risks would be if aliens actually come here. Then you face the risk of unknown disease and possible hostility. Of course, discovery could play havoc with organized religion. That in itself would be worth the price of admission!
2. I think so. I would like to think that anyone intelligent enough to conquer interstellar travel would also be intelligent enough to be peaceful.
3. I run SETI because I think we will eventually find someone out there and I would like to help it happen as quickly as possible. Such a discovery would eclipse all others.
