Profile: Europa/Titan(Neil Bach)

Personal background
I have been interested in astronomy for over thirty years and read books, magazines and related articles ferociously. I believe the answers mankind needs and seeks are out there beyond our stratosphere, deep into the realm of our immense universe.(That's me in the white shirt)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
When I discovered how immense our Universe is as a child and that all of it came out of an explosion of an unthinkably small size 13-15 billion years ago, I've been hooked on astronomy and the questions which arise from its study. One of the most tantalizing questions for many, including me, is is there life elsewhere beyond our planet and our solar system? It's a question which has plagued scientists and philosophers for centuries. We are finally at a stage in human technological development where we can begin to answer such a daring question. I think there is a chance that microbial life will be discovered within our solar system during my lifetime on either Mars, Europa, Titan or Enceladus. On the larger question of whether there is intelligent life, which can communicate, I am less confident in. There are several reasons for this. First is the age of the Universe. Look how far we have come in 100 years. Imagine a civilization which arose 100,000 or a million years earlier than us(a small blink in time). Would they not have populated "their" or "our" Galaxy by now and hence left signatures inevitably brought on by technology? We see no evidence of this (At least not yet and hence the reason I am involved in this project). Secondly, I wonder that with rapid increases in technology, advanced civilizations may eventually destroy themselves before another communicable civilization arises. Thirdly, astronomers are discovering that our solar system and its construction might not be the norm, which lowers the chances even more. Despite all this I am hopeful and extremely grateful to have an opportunity to play a role(albeit a small one) in this search. Good luck to the folks at SETI and to all, Live long and prosper!
