Profile: Ian James Carmichael

Personal background

NAME: Ian Carmichael

AGE: 30

HOME: Anglesey, North Wales

WHY DO I DO SETI: I would love to believe that one day Colonel Adama and the crew of the Battlestar Galactica will one day discover Earth!!! no, seriously...

REAL REASON: I've always been an astronomy nut and find it harder to believe there is no life in the universe than believing we are not alone. Why not help in the search?

FUTURE PLANS: discover E.T. - Sell my story to time magazine (or playboy depending on who bids highest!) and buy an island in the sun where there is no horizontal rain or 50mph fog like here in Anglesey.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
What do I know about ET? Well I know I've never met him, or have any claim to think that one night whilst walking my dog I saw strange lights in the mist over an old wood! Nope... Nothing at all to give me any physical evidence whatsoever - so why do I believe in the SETI project? Quite simply put, I'm pretty good with numbers / statistics. I know that 40% of the people reading this profile will read the second line and think I said I saw something until they read it again! In the same way I know that doing the lottery every week until I die is almost certainly going to leave my children ((age of death-30)*52) quid worse off than if I saved it and stored it under the stairs. When you apply maths and stats to the astronomy picture it is almost inconceivable to think that earth is the only planet to support life anywhere in the universe. The odds on our planet being the only one in our galaxy are pretty huge too... and even if only a tiny fraction of all the stars in our galaxy had solar systems similar to our own, and only a fraction of them had life, and only a tiny fraction of those planets had intelligent life, then the chances are there is still at least a few tens of planets on our own galactic doorstep that are probably asking the same thing we are… the big question – ARE WE ALONE? Or maybe they already know the answer!
