Profile: Alta Rica

Personal background
Backgound:

I was born in 1966 in County Antrim, Ireland but now live in Shropshire, England. I am married and have two wonderful children - my daughter Sian (8) and my Son Stephan (4).

I am an IT Security analyst with a global IT company, responsible primarily for Intrusion Detection and Computer Incident Response.

Interests:

I have always been fascinated with Space and the question of "are we alone?". One of my biggest thrills was visiting the Kennedy space centre.

I love reading - Douglas Adams through to Tolkien - anything to do with sci-fiction/Fantasy.

I enjoy tinkering with, and building, PCs - my friends and family use me as their local PC Engineer.

Computer Description:

I run two Athlon PCs (1GHz and 1.4GHz), a dual Athlon 1200MP, an AMD K6-III 450 and occasionally a PIII 850Mhz laptop.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Why do you run SETI@Home?

I feel that it is a wonderful use of computer power, and SETI@Home makes ordinary people like me feel that they can make a worthwhile contribution.

Thoughts on ETI?

In my lifetime I have seen so many things happen that people believed impossible - Men walking on the moon, the fall of Aparthied in South Africa, the fall of the Berlin Wall, a peace of sorts in Ireland and England winning the soccer World Cup! Statistically the odds are in favour of ETI existing so why not believe that contact will be made?

I am afraid that if ETI is monitoring our current signals (Television and Radio) they may form the impression that we are a primitive, uncivilised and war-like race. I do believe that if they could listen to our music and view our art they would appreciate that we have the capacity for great beauty and love.

Just like Jodie Foster in 'Contact' (and eveyone running SETI@Home!)- I hope it is one of my work units that 'hears' ET.
