Profile: Eighty Six

Personal background
Hello, I live in Queensland Australia in a place called Woombye which is near the town of Nambour. I turned 50 in July, 2007. I spent almost 25 years as a Police Officer in Sydney and after being injured in an arrest that almost killed me, I was pensioned off. I then moved to Queensland. I was a Scout Leader in Sydney then moved up into the Venturer Scout area. I stayed with Scouting for about a year in Queensland then resigned in April, 2001. I spent a couple of years with the Queensland State Emergency Service. I served as the Training Officer and the Transport Officer. I was also awarded the member of the year award for 2002.

I am a member of the Ulysses Club for motorcycle riders aged 40 and above. I am with the Sunshine Coast Charter of the Club and have created a Team of Ulysses Club Members, hopefully other Ulysses Club Members will join up and give us a voice within the S.E.T.I Community.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does extraterrestrial life exist...... of course it does, how could it not. Somehow I don't think that intelligent life will be found in my lifetime, with my luck ET will contact 5 minutes after I am dead! As for the dangers of finding intelligent life, well, when I think of the different cultures on earth and how conflicts start so easily...... its clear we will have to be very careful in how we interact with them.

Should we transmit a beacon? I figured all the radio and video we send out would be doing that already, I'm affraid I am not well enough informed to know what sort of beacon would be involved. Would it be more powerful than what we already send out? As to content of a dedicated beacon....... perhaps a basic language, my choice would be english of course because I don't know any other, perhaps the alphabet and our number system, give an intelligence a chance to learn our language.

This is the second time I will be running the seti screen saver because it gives me a feeling of doing something worthwhile on a planetary scale for all of us. I think the use of millions of home computers to do this work was a brilliant idea and I'm happy that people have taken up the challenge.

I hear the prospects of actually finding an intelligent signal are extreamly remote but I guess so is the possibility of me winning Lotto. The thing is, somebody somewhere wins Lotto, so maybe, somebody somewhere will be the lucky one to find a signal. I guess you have to be in it to win it!
