Personal background
I live near Leicester, England not far from our excellent National Space Centre. I have a BSc and PhD in Microbiology although nowadays work in IT. I was born in 1958 and that makes me very old indeed. The picture is genuine, just a little out of date that's all - I really missed the opportunity to join a boy band!

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
We are more likely to find microorganisms on other planets than higher life forms because they are so incredibly tough. We are entering an exciting phase in the search for extraterrestrial life with probes going to Mars, and we are turning our attention towards other bodies where liquid water is believed to exist such as Jupiter's moon Europa.

If we do find firm evidence of life on other planets, then we can assume life is likely whenever there is water. Some people even suggest life here originated on Mars and was carried by a meteor. This is more likely to happen than the other way round as it is downhill from Mars!

However, I will not be surprised if we fail to find evidence of intelligent life, because it might destroy itself as soon it has the technology to transmit radio signals.

"Intelligent life is unlikely to exist in the Solar System with the possible exception of the planet Earth" - Sir Patrick Moore.
