Personal background
I am an American living in England, born in 1967. I am Technical Services Director for an electronic equipment maintenance management firm. I enjoy reading, movies, golf, rugby and gaming. I believe wholeheartedly in the value of SETI research and am very glad to have the opportunity to assist in this noble venture. I believe we are not alone, so let's get out there and PROVE it!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I believe it is very likely that extraterrestrial life exists. I think we will probably find non-intelligent life in our own solar system before we detect signals from intelligent life, but we won't find those signals if we don't look for them.

I think that the real benefit we will get from proving other intelligent life exists is that it will force humanity to see itself as a single entity, rather than separate racial, political and religious groups. It will unite us as a race like never before.

Any dangers related to the discovery will be minimal. Any species we do detect will most likely be far away in space, and unable to travel faster than light (FTL). Their signal will be an echo of the past. It is very unlikely that we will be contacted by visitors with FTL spaceships.

As far as sending a beacon ourselves, we already are! Ever since we discovered radio, we've been broadcasting our existence. Anything else would be superfluous. The "damage" is already done, in the sense that our TV and radio broadcasts, in all their inane variety, have already been travelling the cosmos for sixty years or more. Let's hope the "aliens" don't judge us too harshly!

I run SETI@home in order to contribute to the cause of proving we are not alone. I think it's an excellent idea and a wonderful use of otherwise wasted resources. Keep up the good work!
