Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does ET exist? Of course, it is beond the realm of statistical probability the ET doesn't exist!
Benefits and dangers? Good: Being introduced to the federation, Bad: being eaten
Should we have a beacon? Its a balancing act, see benefits and dangers, howver as a race we will have died out long before the signal gets to most of our galaxy much less any other galaxies
What information should we send? Directions to the nearest McDonalds, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken or Pizza Hut, the message will more than likely be sponsored by one of the anyway :)
Why do I run SETI? Same reason as I enter the Lottery, suspension of disbelief, maybe just maybe...
Views on the project? Good idea, if nothing else I can contribute, whilst sleeping, to the good (or bad, see previous answer) of the human race!
Suggestions: being able to download an image of the exact spot you are processing in your current work unit, but then again you probably have much better things to do with your bandwidth :)
