| Personal background |
| I was born on the face of the Earth. I've moved so often that "where are you from?" is the most difficult question to answer...currently, I'm a physics graduate student at the University of Arizona, doing computational astrophysical fluid dynamics -- deep convection and atmospheric dynamics on the Jovian (Jupiter-like) planets. I keep myself sane by playing music, when I find some time...which I haven't for several years. Maybe that's why I started SETI@home. |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I'm an athiest, but I have one question for which some thoughtful religious people might have some insights... If there are civilizations other than ours out there, did they receive their own Jesus Christ, Budda and/or Mohammed The Prophet of their own? If they didn't, what makes our planet so special? I think Arthur C. Clarke raised that question in one of his books (in the Rama series?), and I thought it might keep a few brains busy out there...your brain's processing power just isn't fast enough to do SETI@home, so you might as well use it for something Pentiums can't handle :).
If a civilization is able to survive to advance their science and technology without destroying themselves, there must be a lot we can learn from them. I only hope that the human civilization is mature enough for the encounter when that happens.
Encounters between two civilizations have always been ugly on this planet so far. Let's hope that the end of that ugliness comes soon... |
