Profile: Shresta

Personal background
Anyone out there? hehe Ok, my name is Shresta. I am indian, a freshman in college, and currently live in sunny Florida! It is sooo hot out here right now that my fingers are burning as I type on my flaming, almost melting keyboard! Just kidding!

I was born in Holland (no, not India for the billionth time!) and lived there for about eight years, until I moved and lived on an island in the Carribean for three years and eventually moved to the US. I was fortunate enough to live in many places and obtain a clear understanding of different cultures and environments. I speak Dutch fluently and also speak some Hindi and Spanish. I love to play tennis, sing, write, dance, and watch the NASA channel! Yes, I'm a space freak. :-)

I fell in love with the space program, astronomy, and aviation when I was very little and when I saw my first launch. The space shuttle launch made me realize how important NASA and space exploration really is. It is our future! I've always been very good in all maths and sciences and, therefore, I possess a growing passion, fascination, and curiosity for anything that has to do with math, science, and engineering! :-) I decided that I wanted to become more involved in the space program. Thus, I participated in several NASA programs and competitions at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. I also went to see many space shuttle launches, day and night launches (If you like a detailed account of my launch experiences, email me). Words could not describe the incredible experience of watching a space shuttle launch.

Moving on...I love astronomy! I bought my first BIG telescope a couple of years ago. Thus, I ended up going to bed after midnight many times during the week. I've already seen Saturn's rings, Jupiter's moons, several galaxies, and the craters of the moon. Being outside under the stars brings such fascination, peace, and mystery to me. I am currenly deciding on a definite major in the field of engineering. (Aeronautical, Electrical, Mechanical, or Software).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Looking through a telescope does not entirely satisfy my curiosity! I have always wanted to do and see more. But flying in a spaceship like Jody Foster everyday is not quite possible at the moment, unfortunately! Therefore, I've chosen other things like SETI. It is a great program and makes me feel sooo "important" now that I am trying to help find life in the universe. I'm sure everyone here knows what I mean. I signed up for SETI when I was in high school.

I definitely believe that there's life in the universe. The universe is TOO BIG to just serve as empty, lifeless space.
Plus, humanity needs to survive somehow, someway. And I believe that if we find others like us or close to our physical and mental abilities, then we can learn from others in the universe and survive by passing on our abilities to others. I just hope i'm still alive when this happens! It doesn't hurt to explore and certainly doesn't hurt to hope...
