Personal background
I am an idealist with dreams of happiness for all those around me. But in my corporate life, I am a Systems Programmer and administrator currently in Portland, Oregon.

My hobbies include child-rearing, Web programming, home improvement, car repair, reading, writing, and music appreciation. I am also quite fond of movies and have been known to memorize entire films after only one sitting.

I have a wife and 1.75 kids.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I have little doubt that we are the only life project in the universe. But I am certain that we should not make ourselves that insignificant by saying we are not unique in the universe. On the contrary, we should embrace all earthly life and work at expansion.. there are lots of worlds to populate, and we are running out of space here on earth.

I think the message in a bottle should be transmitted. It should perhaps be sent with various forms of multimedia and should contain ideas and our hopes and dreams with it.

I run SETI@home to help out in the search for life. Tis a longshot, but worthy of a try. From what I have read, the only problem is the working theory of what would be considered a 'wow' transmission. It is only a theory and may, in fact, be wrong. History would say that it is almost certainly wrong and that we are not listening for the correct transmission. I suspect that the vehicle for such a transmission would be as of yet, out of our ability to receive it. If sent via normal radio or light waves, we would never receive the messages in any time to respond. By the time we did receive it, that whole society would have probably forgotten that they sent it -- or more likely, have vanished all together. So.. theoretically, if we were to start picking up transmissions, we would only know that we were not alone at the time it was sent -- which could be a millenia.

So.. I will continue to help analyse gaussian patterns and spikes -- but only because we have nothing better and I only have the ideas, I don't have the means -- well.. at least I don't think I do.. come to think about it, maybe I do and just haven't been given the opportunities. Well.. either way..
