Personal background
Hi

I'm from the good old United Kingdom, and only got into SETI@home quite recently... The rating of SETI@home as being more powerful that ASCII white is very impressive...

My hobbies include:

Computer gaming (especially FPS)
Fencing
Designing Websites
Sci-Fi

Basically i'm your typical nerd :D

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does extraterrestrial life exist? With the universe being as large as it is, it is almost certain we are not alone. If humans will ever discover life is another matter. We may have missed the brief period in an alien being's history when they were spraying radio waves into the sky like we have been for the last century. Also, any meaningful dialog between us and an alien race would be neigh on impossible. The decades long time lag between sending a message and recieving a reply would make establishing enough communication to share science, art, etc. take centuries. Any dangers would be minimal... unless an alien species is more successful than us in beating the speed of light.

Humans should be sending a beacon out into space. What should we send? Something totally clear, which any species with enough intelligence to build radio recievers would understand. Either we should simply broadcast a very strong signal on a specific frequency, or send the first few prime numbers as pulses on a certain frequency.

I run SETI@home because my computer sits idle, with much of its processing power unused for most of the time. With SETI@home, my computer's spare power is used to help a worthwhile cause.
