Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe without a doubt that extraterrestrial life exists. I believe that wherever life (and I mean the dictionary definition here) can _possibly_ exist, it will.

Wherever there are conditions suitable for a form of life, I think it inevitable that life will be there. We all know that what we thought of as suitable conditions last week has been turned upside-down this week, as it will be in the next week after, and so on.

Life without oxygen has been found on Earth, life in hot springs which exceed 100deg/C exists. Even microbes on satellites and other spacecraft, existing in vacuum and terrific radiation levels.

I believe we'll find life on Europa and Jupiter. As for Mars, well, I think it's possible, but it may take a while to find.

I don't think we should broadcast a beacon. What would be the point? Any intelligence out there with the ability to visit will already be receiving a lot of radio noise. If they deem it suitable, they'll pay us a call. We don't need to wave our arms around saying "please come and see us, we're lonely, and by the way, we're quite intelligent".

I run SETI@home because I think it's a worthwhile cause. I don't think we'll intercept any messages aimed specifically at us, but we may overhear some cosmic chit-chat.
