Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Extraterrestrial life certainly exists, and it is just a matter of time, and persistence until science can irrefutably prove it. Evidence of ET would let mankind know for the first time in history that we are not alone in the universe. Possible dangers of such a discovery may include problems of a socio-economic nature, such as panic and hysteria, or problems on a planetary scale such as contamination by an alien pathogen or microbe.
I think that mankind has been making quite a bit of Radio Frequency noise for many years that could possibly be detected. However, all political and monetary considerations aside, I think it would be a great idea to transmit a "deep space beacon" of some sort. Information transmitted should be something of undeniably intelligent origin, and universal in nature, such as a series of prime numbers or mathmatical constants.
I think SETI is an absolutely essential program, and I woudn't change a thing.
