Personal background
I am a 47 year old from Leander, Texas (near Austin). I work for a small manufacturer as a technical writer. My husband of 27 years and I have been running Seti at Home since it began. We have two boys, ages 15 and 21. My favorite hobby is fire dancing, which I've done for the past four years. We share our home with a 30-year old triton cockatoo named Meringue who runs the household.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
To me, it is scarier to think we are truly alone in this massive universe than to think there are others out there. I suspect that if man gains interstellar travel capability, intelligent life will find us. The benefits and dangers of contact could be at either end of the scale. I don't know if we are ready yet. We can't even get along with each other, much less an entirely alien species.

I would worry about a beacon, there may be life forms in the cosmos whose attention we don't want. We do not have any planetary defense system, so we could be just asking for it. It's a gamble and we would need to be prepared for an undesirable response.

I run Seti@home because it is a way I can contribute to the scientific community without being directly involved in academia. I think it's important for everyone to do their part to further the human race. I'm impressed with the number of astonomical features that have been discovered due to Seti@home. I am very proud to have been a part of the first home computer-based research project. Keep up the great work!
